Tippy Martinez: A Look at the Career of a Remarkable Relief Pitcher

Felix Anthony "Tippy" Martinez, born in 1950, is a retired Major League Baseball player who made a name for himself as a talented relief pitcher. Over the course of his 14-year career, Martinez earned a reputation for his skill on the mound, helping his teams achieve notable victories and earning individual accolades along the way. In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the career and achievements of Tippy Martinez, highlighting his contributions to the game of baseball.

Born in La Junta, Colorado, Tippy Martinez began his baseball journey at a young age. He went on to play college baseball at Colorado State University before being drafted by the Washington Senators in the 35th round of the 1969 MLB Draft. However, he did not sign with the team and was later selected by the New York Yankees in the 21st round of the 1972 MLB Draft.

Tippy Martinez made his Major League debut with the New York Yankees in 1974. However, it wasn't until he joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1976 that he truly began to shine as a relief pitcher. Martinez would spend the majority of his career with the Orioles, playing for the team from 1976 to 1986, and then returning for one final season in 1988.

Over the course of his time with the Orioles, Martinez became known for his impressive pitching skills, particularly his devastating curveball. He played an instrumental role in helping the team reach the playoffs multiple times and was a key contributor to their 1983 World Series Championship win.

Martinez's most memorable moment in his career came on August 24, 1983, in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays. With the bases loaded and no outs, Martinez proceeded to pick off all three base runners in the 10th inning, a feat that has never been replicated in Major League Baseball history.

Tippy Martinez's outstanding pitching skills earned him several accolades during his career. He was a three-time All-Star, being selected in 1983, 1984, and 1986. In 1983, Martinez also led the American League in saves with 35, further solidifying his reputation as one of the best relief pitchers of his era.

Following his retirement from professional baseball in 1988, Tippy Martinez remained involved with the game as a coach and mentor. He has worked as a pitching coach at various levels, including college baseball and within the Orioles organization. Martinez's knowledge and experience continue to inspire and educate the next generation of baseball players.

Tippy Martinez's remarkable career as a relief pitcher made a lasting impact on the game of baseball. His unique ability to dominate on the mound, combined with his memorable achievements and contributions to the Baltimore Orioles, have earned him a place in the hearts of baseball fans everywhere. As Martinez continues to share his passion for the game with younger players, his legacy as one of the greatest relief pitchers in Major League Baseball history endures.
