Born Robert Langford Modini Stack on January 13, 1919, in Los Angeles, California, he began his acting career at a young age, debuting in films in the early 1930s.

Stack's breakthrough role came in 1959 when he starred as Eliot Ness in the television series "The Untouchables," which ran until 1963. His portrayal of the stoic, incorruptible Prohibition agent won him critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. The role earned him an Emmy Award and solidified his image as a tough law enforcer.

Beyond "The Untouchables," Stack appeared in over 40 films, showcasing his versatility across a range of genres. He starred in notable movies like "Written on the Wind" (1956), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and "Airplane!" (1980), where he displayed his comedic talents in a satirical role that poked fun at his serious image.

In the later years of his career, Stack became known to a new generation of viewers as the host of the television show "Unsolved Mysteries," which he hosted from 1987 until 2002. His deep voice and somber demeanor lent a chilling authenticity to the show’s tales of paranormal phenomena and unsolved crimes.
