Show me a list of the greatest centres or basketball players of all time that doesn’t include Shaq’s name and I’ll show you a list that is an absolute lie! Shaq reigns supreme even years after he’s retired from the game as he has left a legacy that has yet to be matched by any basketballer since him. His basketball prowess is on par with many other legends such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, etc. and his name has been cemented as one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived. Shaq broke records everywhere he went and his powerful dunks also broke the steel backboard supports in two separate games. 😂 This forced the NBA to improve the stability and strength of their backboards in future games! His basketball accolades include three NBA All-Defensive Team selections, 14 All-NBA team selections, two scoring titles, three Finals MVP awards, three All-Star Game MVP awards, 15 All-Star Game selections, the 1992-93 NBA Rookie of the Year award, and the 1999-2000 MVP Award. Shaq is one of only three basketballers to win the Finals MVP, the All-Star Game MVP, and the NBA MVP awards in the same year, which he did in the year 2000. The only other players who achieved this feat were Michael Jordan in 1996 and 1998 and Willis Reed in 1970. Shaq ranks 8th in blocks, 15th in rebounds, 6th in field goals, and 8th in all-time in points scored. He was a beast when it came on to dunking and scoring from close range and he ranks third in the all-time field goal percentage. In 1996, Shaq was honored as one of basketball’s greatest players alive by being named to the NBA 50th Anniversary Team. In 2016, he was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the following year, he was elected to the FIBA Hall of Fame. He was once again honored in October 2021 by being named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. But who was Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal- the person? To answer that question, we’ll have to take a look back into his history, which may leave many flabbergasted! Shaq was born in Newark, New Jersey on March 6, 1972. His mother’s name is Lucille O’Neal and she was a whopping 1.88 meters tall (6 ft, 2 inches) at the time of his birth. His biological father’s name is Joe Toney and he stood at 1.85 meters (6 ft 1 inch) at the time of his birth. Interestingly, Joe Toney had excelled in high school football, too, and was even offered a basketball scholarship for his skills. Sadly, he became addicted to drugs and by the time Shaq was an infant, he had already been imprisoned for drug possession. When he eventually came out of prison, he didn’t try to build a relationship with his son and chose, instead, to relinquish his fatherly rights to the man Lucille O’Neal had been dating at the time. This man was a career Army sergeant from Jamaica named Phillip A. Harrison and he was a wonderful stepdad to Shaquille. Shaq was a very tall child! He was already 1.98 meters tall (6 ft 6 inches) by the time he was 12 years old and he often played basketball with other kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Newark. But his family would soon move to a military base in Wildflecken, West Germany shortly after due to his stepfather’s military career. While in that foreign country, Shaquille used that time to hone his basketball skills. What Shaq didn’t know was that he would meet the man who would eventually be the coach of his college basketball team right there in Germany! This man was Dale Brown and he was visiting the American military base where Shaq and his family were staying. Shaq was 12 years old at the time and had admired Mr. Brown’s coaching ability; he was certain he could help him improve his dunking style in basketball. So, 12-year-old Shaq walked up to Mr. Dale Brown, tapped him on his back, and said “Sir, I can’t dunk, could you send me some literature to strengthen my lower extremities?” When Mr. Brown turned around, looking back at him was this tall person who Mr. Brown mistook for a soldier! “How long have you been in the army?” asked Mr. Dale Brown and was so surprised when he learnt that Shaq was only 12 years old. Little did he know that he would coach him a few years later or that he would go on to become one of the greatest basketballers who ever lived. Shaq and his family then moved to a variety of different places until they finally settled in San Antonio, Texas. He attended the Robert G. Cole High School and by the age of 16, he had grown to be 2.08 meters (6ft 10 inches) tall. Shaq joined their basketball team and over two years, he helped his team to a 68-1 record and they even won the state championship in his senior year. He actually set a state record in his 1989 season, with a record of 791 rebounds which remains unbroken for any classification to this day. He was often compared to the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during his high school playing days because of his tendency to make hook shots like him. But soon high school would come to a close and Shaquille would move on to the Louisiana State University (LSU) where he would be guided under the tutelage of Mr. Dale Brown and begin to unleash his basketball excellence. In 1991, he was the NCAA men’s basketball player of the year and received the Adolph Rupp Trophy. He also became the two-time SEC Player of the Year as well as the two-time All American Player of the year. Shaquille was also named the college player of the year by the Associated Press and UPI. The Louisiana State University eventually honored Shaquille O’Neal by erecting a 410 kg (900 pounds) bronze statue of him in front of their Basketball Practicing arena. By 1992, Shaquille had been drafted by the Orlando Magic to play on their NBA team and that’s where the basketball magic truly started. He won numerous awards for his impressive performances before moving on to the Los Angeles Lakers’ team in 1996 where he would later team up with teenage superstar Kobe Bryant and win three successive NBA championships between 2000 to 2002. Over the years, Shaq and Kobe produced magic on the court but he departed the team in 2004 due to internal conflicts. He joined the Miami Heats on July 14, 2004, and two years later, Shaq and his team members won the NBA competition for the Miami Heats’ franchise. By February 2008, Shaq had moved to the Phoenix Suns. He stayed with them for one year before moving on to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. In the following year, he moved on to the Boston Celtics before announcing on Twitter on June 1, 2011, that he was retiring from the game. He later held a press conference in Orlando on June 3, 2011, where he officially discussed his retirement with news reporters on site. But Shaq never limited himself to just the basketball courts; no! Shaq has ventured into and dominated acting, music, law enforcement, business, and much more. Shaq’s bubbly personality quickly made him a media personality who was loved by near and far. He had several lovable nicknames from journalists, including “The Big Conductor”, “Shagovic”, “The Big Leprechaun”, “Big Shamrock”, “Superman”, “The Diesel” and others. He also appeared in countless commercials and has appeared in numerous television shows and movies. Shaq’s love for music stirred up a desire to make music of his own. So in 1993, he released Shaq Diesel, his first album, which was quickly certified platinum by the RIAA. Overall, Shaq has released one compilation album and five studio albums. In 2017, LaVar Ball asserted that he and his younger son LaMelo could easily defeat Shaquille and his son Shareef in a basketball game. In response, Shaq released a diss track aimed at him and it took social media by storm. But Shaq’s influence doesn’t end there…Shaquille O’Neil is even involved with Law Enforcement. That’s right! The Los Angeles Port Police once had Shaq as one of their reserve officers and he was even given an honorary U.S. Deputy Marshal title on March 2, 2005. By December 8, 2005, Shaq was sworn in as a reserve officer for Miami Beach and he even helped the Miami-Dade police track down and arrest two suspects on charges of assault and aggravated battery. Nowadays, Shaquille is an NBA basketball analyst, along with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Ernie Johnson on TNT. He is also an active real estate entrepreneur, investor, and businessman. He owns significant shares in PepsiCo, Apple, General Electric and he is on the advisory board of Tout Industries. Shaq is also a global spokesperson for Krispy Kreme and even purchased one of their locations in Atlanta in late 2016. This is at the 295 Ponce de Leon Avenue. He is also a spokesperson for Papa John’s after joining their board of directors in early 2019 and investing in nine of their Atlanta stores. Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal was a basketball powerhouse who brought a level of talent, brilliance, and dominance to the basketball courts that took breaths away every time he played. His larger-than-life personality also added bits of comedy and humor to the NBA basketball courts and lightened the mood in times of great anxiety and tension. This was greatly appreciated by both sports analysts, journalists, and onlookers alike.
