Jim Kern is a retired American professional baseball player. He was born on March 15, 1949, in Gladwin, Michigan. Kern played as a relief pitcher for various teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1974 to 1986.

Kern began his professional baseball career with the Cleveland Indians in 1974, and quickly established himself as a strong and reliable relief pitcher. He played for several other teams throughout his career, including the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox, among others.

Kern's best season was in 1979 with the Texas Rangers, where he led the American League in saves and was named an All-Star. He also set a record for the most appearances by a relief pitcher in a single season, with 84.

Despite his success on the field, Kern's career was plagued by injuries, and he retired from baseball in 1986. After his retirement, he became involved in coaching and worked with several minor league teams.

Overall, Jim Kern was a talented and respected relief pitcher during his time in Major League Baseball. His achievements on the field, including his record-breaking 1979 season, cemented his place in baseball history.
