Tiger Woods is widely recognized as one of the best golfers of all time and one of the most famous athletes in the world, too. For many years his persistence and precision has helped to redefine the game of golf and has left a legacy of excellence in the sport that is modelled by almost every aspiring golfer.
Tiger Woods is credited with being the golfer who effected a shift to higher athletic standards amongst professional golfers. He is also the first athlete to achieve a net worth of 1 billion dollars, eclipsing his closest competitors in Michael Schumacher and Michael Jordan in the year 2009.
Tiger Woods became the first golfer of Asian or African American heritage to win the Masters Tournament and he later went on to consecutively win the other four prestigious events in golfing multiple times. These events are the PGA Championship, the British Open (Open Championship) and the US Open.
He was actually introduced to the game of golf by his father Earl Woods. Earl had been in his garage hitting balls into a net when he saw his 11-month-old ‘Tiger’ Woods get out of his high chair, take up his plastic toy club and then execute a perfect golf swing! Talk about a child prodigy, huh!
From that moment on, Earl Woods knew his son was destined to be a golf star.
Tiger Woods was born in Cypress, California on December 30, 1975 and his real name is Eldrick Tont Woods. His father is a Vietnam War veteran and retired U.S. Army Officer of African American descent while his mother is originally from Thailand, and is of Dutch, Chinese, and Thai ancestry. Her name is Kultida Woods (née Punsawad).
Amateur Career
Tiger Woods boasts one of the most admirable amateur careers in the history of golf. He was already showing off his talent on The Mike Douglas Show and CBS News at the tender age of 2! One year later, Tiger was in Cyprus at the Navy Golf Club shooting 48 for nine holes!
Tiger Woods won his first Junior World Golf Championships at the age of 8 and then went on to win it five more times, at ages 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, and 15 respectively. The age of 8 was also the very first time Tiger Woods broke 80. He also won the Insurance Youth Golf Classic National at age 14; thus, becoming the youngest person to ever win it.
He won the US Junior Amateur Championship at age 15 and was the youngest person to ever do so until 2010 when Jim Liu came along. Tiger Woods then went on to win the US Junior Amateur Championships an additional five times, including successive wins from 1988 to 1991.
In 1994, Tiger Woods set his sights on the U.S. Amateur being held at the TPC at Sawgrass, Florida. Of course, he won the competition with flying colors and became the youngest person to ever do it at the time. This record has since been broken by Danny Lee in 2008. Tiger also went on to win the Jerry Pate Invitational, the William Tucker Invitational, the Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship, the Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship, and the Western Amateur Championship in the same year.
Tiger Woods was also an instrumental member of the American Team at the Eisenhower Trophy World Amateur Golf Team Championships held in Versailles, France. He shot rounds of 71-75-67-72—285 and led the team to an 11-stroke victory.
Tiger Woods was offered many scholarships by different universities around the country. He ultimately chose Stanford University’s golf scholarship and enrolled with them in the fall of 1994 to study Economics. By 1995, Tiger was voted Stanford’s Male Freshman of the Year, NCAA First Team All-American, and Pac-10’s Player of the Year after adeptly defending his US Amateur title. In 1996, Tiger won the US Amateur title again, thereby becoming the first person to win it three times in a row.
Yet Tiger knew somewhere deep inside of him that studying Economics at Stanford was crippling his dreams of becoming the best golfer who ever lived. So, he left college in 1996 to become a professional in golfing and take the world by storm! He actually reached #1 in the world rankings in less than a year after turning into a professional golfer!
Not bad for a 21-year-old with major problems with his eyesight, huh?
Professional Career
Tiger Woods turned professional in August 1996 and came on the scene with a determination and focus that was initially described as cocky by one interviewer. Tiger asserted that he was there to win and that “second sucks and third is even worse”. The interviewer then attempted to debase his confidence by telling him “you’ll learn” but Tiger showed him his superiority the moment he set foot on that golf course! Golfing had lacked a truly dominant player for decades and Tiger’s performances showed that he was here to change that and stamp his name among the greats!
His spectacular performances on the golf course earned him lucrative advertising deals, too. These deals were made with Accenture, American Express, General Mills, Titleist, General Motors, and Nike, Inc., and overall sponsorship in the game of golf started to increase exponentially!
His Nike contract alone was estimated to be about USD $40 million dollars and was the most lucrative advertising contract in the sport at the time. To this day, Tiger continues to receive a percentage from the sales of Nike golf balls, golf equipment, golf apparel, and footwear and even has a building named after him in Beaverton, Oregon at Nike’s headquarters.
He was also chosen as PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year and Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year in 1996. Tiger Woods and his dad also established the Tiger Woods Foundation in 1996. This foundation aimed to promote the sport of golf to inner-city children.
Tiger Woods then went on to become the youngest winner of the Masters at age 21 on April 13, 1997, and he did it in record-breaking fashion too by winning by a margin of 12 strokes! He quickly became a favorite among golf fans and an intimidating opponent to his competitors. Tiger’s mental toughness coupled with his phenomenal putting and chipping and his booming long game made him generate club speeds which regularly hit drives of more than 300 yards!
His 1998 season was not as impressive, so many started to discredit his abilities. But Tiger Woods came back with a storm in 1999 by winning eight of the major golf championships. These wins included the PGA championship- a feat that had not been accomplished since 1974. He also had laser surgery done on his eyes to correct his severe myopia, too. So just guess what this did for his golfing performance afterward?
In the years that followed, Tiger Woods went on to break records after records. He became the very first professional golfer to hold all four of the major golfing championships simultaneously. He has won 3 British Open Championships, 3 US Open Championships, 4 PGA Championships, and 5 Masters Tournaments. He also boasts 82 PGA Tour wins-thereby tying with Sam Snead for the most wins in history.
Tiger Woods is also the fourth golf in history to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was presented with this award in May 2019 by then-President Donald Trump.
