Who would have thought that the slender guy who many underestimated and even ridiculed in 2009 would become a national sensation by ultimately changing the game of basketball as we know it? Who would have thought that the same player would later be called the greatest shooter in NBA history by sporting analysts and basketball experts all around the world? But that isn’t the only name they call him- they also call him the All-Time 3-Point King because of his iconic, pure and utter dominance of the often under-utilized move. Steph Curry brought an evolution to the 3-point shot that no one had ever seen before and he and his team have used it to win four NBA championships and they don’t plan on stopping any time soon.
Steph Curry has an aura of invincibility about him that is only witnessed in other legends of the game. But yet he still manages to be humble and praise God for all his victories, and often interacts with his many fans on social media, too. Interestingly, he and LeBron James were born in the same hospital at the Summa Akron City Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Who knows……maybe that hospital has a knack for producing basketball legends?
This is a story of persistence, dedication, and basketballing innovation. This is the story of Steph Curry.
On March 14, 1988, the world was blessed with Wardell Stephen Curry II, the same guy we commonly call ‘Steph Curry’ today. He is the first of three children to Dell Curry, a former NBA expert sharpshooter, and Sonya Curry, an educator. So from a very tender age, Steph Curry was thrust into the world of basketball and he loved every minute of it. Soon he and his dad were using basketball time as a means of bonding and his dad taught him every intricacy of the game. But despite his impressive ‘basketball IQ’ and accurate shooting skills, major colleges overlooked him when issuing their basketball scholarships because of his average height and wiry, 160 lb. frame.
So Steph chose to enroll in Davidson (North Carolina) College- the only school that had shown keen interest in him from his teenage years. Bob McKillop was the head coach of their basketball team and had been singing Steph praises and boosting his self-confidence to record heights! Steph fondly remembers him saying “Wait 'til you see Steph Curry. He is something special." Bob McKillop’s faith in Steph would prove to be one of the most instrumental acts which helped to mold Steph into the phenomenal basketballer he is today. The Davidson (North Carolina) College wasn’t a very big school nor was it known for its impressive basketball skills but Steph Curry decided that he was going to be the one to change that for them.
In the first game collegiate game of his freshman season, Steph played against Eastern Michigan Eagles. He scored a solid 15 points in that game but sadly, he had all of 13 turnovers. This left many people on the team concerned but Bob McKillop wasn’t one of them. He kept Steph on the team and on the court, and this decision would prove to be one of the best he had ever made for the team.
Curry exploded in the games that followed as he was on a mission to prove everyone wrong! In his next game against the Michigan Wolverines, he grabbed 9 rebounds, 4 assists, and all of 32 points. In a semi-finals game of the Southern Conference Tournament on March 2, 2007, Steph successfully shot his 113th three-pointer of the year, thereby smashing Keydren Clark’s NCAA freshman record and putting his name amongst the collegiate basketball greats. Curry ended the season being the second-highest college scorer in the US- second only to Kevin Durant.
He averaged 21.5 points per game and helped his team win a regular-season title in the Southern Conference. At the end of his freshman season, Steph was selected to the First-Team All-SoCon, All-Freshman team and the SoCon All-Tournament team. He was also named as the SoCon Tournament MVP and the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. Sports Illustrated also gave him an honourable mention in their All-Mid-Major. After that season ended, Steph would get the surprise of his life when he was chosen as a member of the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship USA team. He averaged 2.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 9.4 points in 19.4 minutes and helped his team to win a silver medal.
His progression through college would be marked by further improvements in his basketball skills and even growth in his overall stature, too. Did you know that Steph Curry only missed one game of his college career? This happened because he had rolled his ankle in the 2nd half of the game against Furman on February 14, 2009 and Steph made sure no such accidents ever happened again. Two weeks later, Steph and his team played the Georgia Southern Eagles. Of course, Steph and his team decimated them in a 99-56 win but what is even more interesting is the fact that Steph Curry garnered all of 34 points! This pushed his total career points all the way up to 2488, thereby breaking the school record at Davidson (North Carolina) College held by John Gerdy. Steph went on to score all of 43 points in the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament game against the Appalachian State Mountaineers. This was the 3rd most points a player had ever scored in the tournament’s history and his team also won 84-68.
In his final season at Davidson (North Carolina) College, Steph averaged 2.5 steals, 5.6 assists, and 28.6 points. During that season, he became the leader in the NCAA Scoring and was also named a consensus first-team All-American. Steph chose not to do his senior year at Davidson (North Carolina) College; the Golden State Warriors had seen something special in him and made him the offer to join their team. Thus, he finally got the opportunity he had been dreaming of all his life- a chance to play in the NBA!
He was chosen as the 7th pick of the Golden State Warriors and he was once again placed under public scrutiny from even more people looking on. Many thought that because of his small frame he would be a liability to the Golden State Warriors and Steph knew all eyes were on him to prove that an ‘undersized’ player could excel in the NBAs. But during the time of his entry, the Golden State Warriors were in an interesting time in their history, having come in last in the Western Conference and they were on the verge of losing their point guard Jamal Crawford in free agency. Curry was the one chosen to replace him and they gave him a chance to play on the court just after three games on the bench due to the glimmer of potential that they saw in him.
Steph had a great rookie year, averaging 1.9 steals, 5.9 assists, and 17.5 points in 36 minutes of play per game. The Golden State Warriors were trying to develop Steph into a star athlete and it worked! During this time, he had the most 30-point games for a rookie, excluding LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony. He also became the runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award and set a record for the most three-pointers made by a rookie. In fact, in only 80 games, Steph managed to score 166 three-pointers; pretty impressive for a guy who just started playing professionally, huh? 😏
Steph would steadily improve in the seasons that followed until Steph suffered from an ankle injury that required surgery. The injuries would once again plague him in his 2011-2012 season, where he received multiple injuries on his right ankle and foot. When he did get to play, Steph seemed to be more careful- not unleashing all of his athletic greatness out of fear of getting hurt. This showed in his performance on the court, which was average when compared to his previous games.
At the end of this season, the Golden State Warriors were left with a very important decision to make: extend Steph Curry’s contract or not? Thankfully, the Golden State Warriors saw something very special in Steph Curry and they chose to extend his contract for 4 years at 44 million dollars, despite others warning that doing so would be a huge mistake because Steph was an ‘injury liability.’ This act of faith in him also boosted Steph’s confidence and he decided that he was going to make the Golden State Warriors shine!
After successfully completing another surgery on his right ankle, Steph was able to resume training in preparation for the 2012-2013 season. He trained arduously with his teammate Klay Thompson and their chemistry and perfect execution on the court earned them the nickname the ‘Splash Brothers’ because they were indubitably the best shooting duo in the league. The Golden State Warriors then made a drastic change to their MO: instead of trying to get closer to the rim, they tried to take as many three-pointers as possible! This would have a ripple effect on other teams in the league and thus, Steph helped to change the game forever!
Steph’s signature move is making 3-point shots from closer to the half-court line than the 3-point line, thereby leaving the area around the basket less guarded. This is because players have to come out further to try and get the ball from him and his teammates. His approach to 3-point shots has had a palpable effect on the NBA and basketball, at large, as more teams are adopting this approach in their technique as they try to come out on top.
Steph and his team went on to win four NBA championships. He has also won an NBA All-Star Game MVP Award, an NBA Finals MVP Award and 2x NBA MVP Awards. He has also made the All-NBA selection a whopping 8 times and is an 8 time NBA All-Star.
