Veteran actor Ron Perlman is no stranger to the big screens of Hollywood. Boasting one of the most diverse acting careers in Hollywood history, Ron Perlman is now considered to be one of the Hollywood Greats! His career spans more than four decades and he has played roles in more films and movies than we can imagine! Ron Perlman has also used his distinctive voice to make waves in the world of voice acting, appearing in numerous commercials, animated series/films, and even video games!
Ron’s full name is Ronald N. Perlman and he was born in Manhattan, New York on April 13, 1950. His father’s name was Bertram Perlman and he was a drummer and repairman, while his mother was Dorothy Perlman. She worked at the City Clerk’s Office.
Ron Perlman’s acting skills are diverse and he has played roles ranging from that of an aging transsexual to a pre-historic ape-man. But one thing that is always consistent about Ron and the characters that he plays is the fact that he’ll always be a rebel. Whether it be a rebellious half-demon beckoned to our planet by the Nazis (Hellboy), a recusant human organ trader (Pacific Rim), or simply the rebellious biker we’ve all grown to know and love in Sons of Anarchy.
The very first acting role he played was in the film Quest for Fire (1981) by Jean-Jacques Annaud. He then went on to play various supporting roles in television series and films for the next six years until he got his big break with the Beauty and the Beast television series in 1987. This series continued for three years and his phenomenal acting in it earned him a Golden Globe Award in 1989 in the category of ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series.’
He then went on to play varying roles in different films and television series until 1995 when he got a leading film role in the engrossing French film La Cité des enfants perdus (The City of Lost Children). This science fantasy film was written by Gilles and Jeunet Adrien and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. It follows the life of the evil and aging character Krank who is trying to fight death by stealing the dreams of children. But he makes the mistake of stealing Ron’s child in the film and Ron joins forces with his friend Miette to save his son and the world from Krank’s evil plans.
Hellboy is another film for which Ron achieved massive success and recognition, although most people nowadays probably know him for the role he played in Sons of Anarchy as the character Clay Morrow. Clay was a founding member of the SAMCRO biker gang. He was backstabbing, merciless, calculating, and greedy but he helped to transform the gang into a criminal empire that ruled over most of the US. Many also adored Clay Morrow because he had a streak of vigilantism inside of him: he helped to keep the place peaceful and he ensured that drugs were off the streets. Although Clay Morrow didn’t make it out of the Sons of Anarchy series alive, Ron’s performance in the show helped to stamp him in the hearts of all those who loved and watched the show.
