  Mike Tyson is blessed with many talents but the one for which he is most known is his menacingly exciting presence in the boxing ring. He got the nicknames ‘Kid Dynamite’ and ‘Iron Mike’ early on in his boxing career because his competitors quickly realized that fighting against him in the boxing ring would only unleash unbearable pain and destruction, like a terrifying tornado that manifested out of nowhere! As he progressed further on in his boxing career, many lauded him as ‘the baddest man on the planet’ since he continued to reign as the undisputed world heavyweight champion for many years and became the youngest boxer to ever do so. Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. His mother’s name was Lorna Mae Smith Tyson. Mike’s biological father was a Jamaican named Purcell Tyson but he was not present in Mike’s life, so Lorna had to raise her three kids alone. Growing up in the borough of Brooklyn was never easy for Mike Tyson and his family; it became even harder when his mom died when he was just 16 years old. After the death of his mother, his childhood became even rougher since he was frequently moved around different neighborhoods with high crime rates. Tyson soon found himself caught up in petty crimes and numerous fights and he was eventually placed in Johnstown, New York at the Tryon School for Boys. This was the school of reform where Bobby Stewart discovered the immense boxing potential that Mike Tyson had. Bobby Stewart trained Mike for a couple of months before placing him in the care of Cus D’Amato- the man who eventually became his legal guardian, his first trainer, and his boxing manager. Under the tutelage of D’Amato, Mike Tyson went on to win gold medals at the Junior Olympic Games in 1981 and 1982. Mike’s skills as a boxer continued to increase and in 1984, he beat Jonathan Littles and became the winner at the Nation Golden Gloves competition held in New York. On March 6, 1985 Mike Tyson officially stepped into the world of professional boxing and he took the world by storm! He was just 18 years old at the time but he managed to win Hector Mercedes in Albany, New York by a first-round technical knockout. Yet that victory was just a taste of what was to come. Mike Tyson won twenty-six of his first twenty-eight fights by knockout or technical knockout, with sixteen of those wins coming in the first round! Mike’s winning streak continued to grow by the minute and it even attracted media attention, too. But sadness would strike on November 4, 1985, when Mike’s mentor Cus D’Amato died at the Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. D’Amato developed pneumonia and eventually succumbed to the disease and many speculate that it affected Mike greatly. Nonetheless, Mike Tyson continued on with his boxing career and had his very first televised match in Troy, New York at Houston Field House on February 16, 1986. This match was aired on ABC Sports and it was against Jesse Ferguson, a journeyman heavyweight. Mike unleashed some fearsome shots upon him and the pair exchanged punches with each other until round five when Mike gave him an uppercut which actually broke his nose! Mike Tyson later won this match by a technical knockout. Mike Tyson then went on to record six more victories by way of knockout before fighting against Marvis Frazier- the former world title challenger. Mike charged at Frazier and had him unconscious by way of an uppercut in just thirty seconds into the fight. This match was held in Glens Falls, New York, and was also broadcast on ABC Sports. On November 22, 1986, Mike Tyson stunned the world when he became the youngest person to win the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship at just 20 years and 4 months. He won Trevor Berbick by means of a technical knockout in the second round. He then went on to beat Tony Tucker and James Smith a year later, thus adding the IBF and WBA titles to his name. Mike Tyson would continue to intimidate his opponents with his strength for many years after. He had an explosive punching technique which he achieved by crouching immediately before he threw in an uppercut or a hook. This allowed the momentum from his legs to add more power to his punch. He also combined outstanding timing and coordination with awe-inspiring accuracy and hand speed. He’d frequently supply a right hook to his competitor’s body right before giving them a right uppercut to their chin. This move frequently knocked out his opponents. Yet crushing his opponents in the boxing ring was not the only thing Mike Tyson was good at. He also ventured into acting, film production, and authorship, too. His most famous acting role was in The Hangover (2009) when he played a fictionalized version of himself. Mike also collaborated with Spike Lee in 2012 and brought the Broadway show to life. By February of the following year, Mike set his sights even higher and started creating a show which spoke not only about Mike Tyson: the boxer but also Mike Tyson: the man. It was a favourite for many of his fans since it gave undiluted look into the different aspects of his life and his experiences which made him into the man he is. Mike decided to call this show Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth and it aired on November 16, 2013 on HBO. Fox Sports 1 also featured a six-episode series called Being: Mike Tyson in September 2013 which also spoke about his personal and private life. Mike Tyson also released his autobiography titled Undisputed Truth in November 2013. It received the award for best autobiography at the Golden Podium Awards Ceremony. His book also made it to the New York Times Best Seller’s List. Mike Tyson’s second book called Iron Ambition was released in May 2017 and details his relationship with Cus D’Amato- the man who became his legal guardian and surrogate father after his mother’s death.
