Larry Bird was born on the 7th of December 1956 in West Baden Springs, Indiana. His parents were Claude Joseph Bird and Georgia Bird and they were of Native American, Scottish and Irish heritage. They lived in a poor community called French Lick which was not too far from West Baden Springs. His dad had been a veteran of the Korean War who’d found work at a nearby factory. Meanwhile, his mother was a waitress who eventually had to juggle two jobs to take care of her six children when she and her husband got divorced. Sadly, Larry’s dad became an alcoholic soon after this divorce and he eventually committed suicide 1 year after the divorce was finalized. Larry’s childhood was rough- both emotionally and financially. His parents’ divorce really took a toll on both him and his siblings and these familial troubles pushed him into the game of basketball even more. While on the court, Larry found temporary escape from all the trials in his life and he got a sense of what true greatness entailed. Thus, he craved more and he put in the practice needed to achieve that greatness, too! Larry Bird quickly became a basketball legend during his high school years; everyone in French Lick knew of his greatness and were predicting that he would be the next big star in the NBA by the time he left high school. Those predictions didn’t play out exactly as they had anticipated since he opted to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers upon leaving high school. The Indiana Hoosiers is the basketball team of the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana; at the time, they were under the tutelage of coach Bobby Knight. But nostalgia would soon have its toll on Larry shortly after and within one month he was back in French Lick attending the local community college there. One year later, Larry Bird found himself at the Indiana State University where he joined the Sycamores- their local basketball team. While playing for the Sycamores, Larry was actually drafted for the Boston Celtics 1978 NBA team! He was their 6th overall pick that year and everyone at the Indiana State University thought that they’d have to wave him goodbye as he embarked on his journey to NBA excellence. But Larry made a move that shocked everyone in the NBA and sent ripples of amazement through the Indiana State University. In 1978 when Larry was drafted by the NBA, he chose, instead, to continue playing for his university team, leading them to an undefeated regular season. It was during this season that Larry Bird first met Magic Johnson, thereby igniting a lifelong, fiery rivalry that would light up the tongues of NBA analysts and fans for years to come. The 1979-1980 season of the NBA saw Larry Bird’s official entry into professional basketball. He had an immediate impact on the Celtics team, ameliorating their performance by 32 wins when compared to their previous season. Sadly, his team was defeated during the playoffs of the Conference Finals that season. Larry Bird was a versatile player on the court, and he was regarded by many to be the greatest forward who ever lived. He could play both the outside and inside positions well and he was one of the first players in the NBA to fully utilize the three-point line and popularize its use. Larry Bird played for the Celtics for the entirety of his professional career which lasted for 13 seasons. During that time, he led his team to 3 NBA championship wins and 5 NBA finals appearances. Larry Bird was the winner of the NBA Most Valuable Player Award between the years 1984 to 1986, making him the only forward in the history of the NBA to achieve such a feat consecutively thrice. He has also won the NBA Finals MVP Award twice and is a 12x recipient of the NBA All-Star Award. In 1992, Larry Bird was chosen to be a part of the USA’s ‘Dream Team’ which went on to win gold in the Olympics that year. Larry Bird has won numerous other awards for his spectacular performance on the court. The NBA celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2021 and in October of that same year, they selected him as one of the 75th Greatest Players to ever grace the game; they also named him to their 75th Anniversary Team. He was twice inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: in 2010 for being a part of the USA’s Olympic ‘Dream Team’ and in 1998 for his individual contributions to the sport. In 1996, Larry Bird was also voted to the NBA’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. During the course of his career, Larry Bird is the only person in the history of the NBA to be named All-Star MVP, Finals MVP, Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Executive of the Year, and Coach of the Year. In addition, only four persons have ever been the recipient of the NBA Lifetime Achievement Award since its inception in 2016. And guess who is one of those recipients?😏 That’s right! Larry Bird shared the Award with Magic Johnson in 2019. If the achievements of Larry Bird send nothing but tingles of admiration down your spine, then grab this signed Boston Celtics warm up jacket before another fan beats you to it! This dual signed jersey has been fully authenticated by MJB Memorabilia and is just waiting for the perfect Larry Bird fan to give it a new home.
