Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson Jr. is a basketball maverick with many accolades to his name. As a well-known pillar of basketball history, his career achievements include 10 All-NBA 1^st and 2^nd team nominations, 12 All-Star games, 9 NBA finals appearances, and 3 NBA MVP Awards. Magic Johnson is considered by many to be the greatest point guard of all time and he was honoured in 1996 as one of the fifty greatest players in NBA history. Magic Johnson played all of thirteen seasons for the Lakers Basketball team and in 2021 he was selected to be a part of the NBA’s 75^th Anniversary team. Yet all of his stardom hasn’t been gained from his spectacular performances on the court. Magic Johnson is also the former president of both the NBA and the Los Angeles Lakers professional basketball team. He is also an esteemed business man and media figure who now has an estimated net worth of about USD $600 million. In fact, the year 2009 saw him being named as one of USA’s most influential black businessmen by Ebony Magazine. Magic Johnson has also been a passionate advocate for safe sex and HIV/AIDS prevention since his retirement from basketball. In 1991, he announced that he was HIV positive and it was this revelation on his part that helped to widely dispel the notion that HIV was a disease only homosexuals needed to worry about. At the time, most people believed the stereotype that heterosexuals were immune to the disease. Many people commended his bravery for making such an announcement and they still do to this day. This is because he is one of very few celebrities who have been brave enough to open up their lives and show that you can still live positive, fulfilling lives even though you have HIV. But how did Magic Johnson rise to such immense levels of fame and where did he get the name ‘Magic’ from anyway? To answer these questions, we’ll have to take a trip down memory lane; you’ll witness how the legend of Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson Jr. was made. Magic Johnson was born on August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan. His mother’s name was Christine and she was a school janitor. His father’s name was Earvin Johnson Sr. and he was an assembly worker at General Motors. He had nine siblings in all, three of which were from his father’s previous marriage. His parents were hard workers and so he adopted their strong work ethic. Magic would often recall how his father used to juggle janitorial work at a used car lot nearby, all while never missing one day at his job at General Motors. Some days, Magic even assisted his dad with carrying away the garbage from his janitorial job. Because of this, the kids in his neighbourhood used to tease him by calling him ‘Garbage Man’ but Magic didn’t let that stop him. His mother had a similar level of dedication to her work. Even though she would come home looking visibly tired from her day job, she still spent many hours preparing their meals for the next day and ensuring that the house was well kept. These two examples of dedication and professionalism from his parents would be deciding factors that helped to shape him into the star he is today. Magic Johnson had a love for basketball from a very tender age. Both his mom and his dad played basketball as teenagers and he did the same. Bill Russell was his favorite basketball player, whom he admired for his many championship wins- all of eleven NBA championships! That’s quite impressive for a man who played professional basketball for only thirteen years. Magic Johnson also loved Marques Haynes and Earl Monroe. As a child, Magic Johnson used to play basketball every day and by the time he was in the 8^th grade, he was already thinking about pursuing a professional career in basketball. As time progressed, he became a dominant teenage basketball player and he was a force to reckon with on the court. His father taught him all the tips and tricks he had learnt from playing the game and he continued to help him refine his craft. In one game, he scored all of 48 points! Magic Johnson had set his dreams on attending Sexton High School which was only five blocks from where he lived. This was because they had a spectacular basketball team and he knew he could shine if he made it on to their team. These dreams were decimated, however, when his parents placed him at Everett High School which mainly had white kids. There were lots of incidents of racism at Everett High School during his time and it even showed on their basketball team. Before long, all of the black, basketball-loving boys huddled together and formed their own team……and guess what? They considered Magic Johnson to be their leader! In fact, he first got the name ‘Magic’ after a game for Everett High School’s team in which he recorded 16 assists, 18 rebounds and a triple-double of 36 points. He was only a 15-year-old sophomore at the time but sports writer, Fred Stabley Jr., from the Lansing State Journal was at the game and he was completely flabbergasted at his performance.  He dubbed him ‘Magic’ Johnson and that moniker has stuck with him ever since. In his final high school season, Magic Johnson averaged 16.8 rebounds and 28.8 points per game and he led the Everett High School team to a 27-1 win-loss record and championship victory. By the team he left high school, he was named to the McDonald’s All-American team of 1977, he had two All-State selections and he was considered to be the best high school basketballer to come from the state of Michigan. Magic was recruited by many top-ranking colleges but in the end, he chose the Michigan State University which was close to home. He decided to pursue a degree in Communication Studies and hoped to become a television commentator after school. But by 1979, he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers and was now officially a professional basketballer. Magic was honoured to be getting the chance to play with the legendary Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and they were expected to make an unstoppable pair that would carry the team to an NBA victory. That is exactly what they did and in addition, Magic Johnson became the only rookie basketball player to ever win the NBA Finals MVP award. He also became one of only four basketballers to win the NBA and NCAA championships in consecutive years. Magic Johnson continued to make trailblazing performances in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers, and he broke almost every record there was until 1991 when he made an announcement that shook the world. During his pre-game testing for the 1991-1992 season, Magic Johnson discovered that he had contracted HIV. He later held a press conference on November 7 of the same year in which he announced his plans for immediate retirement. During the press conference, he assured his fans worldwide that his wife and unborn child were safe from the virus after they tested negative. This news took the world by storm and opened up the conversation about promiscuity and the dangers it could pose to those who practiced it irresponsibly. Magic Johnson admitted that he used to have ‘harems of women’ during his playing career and changed sexual partners frequently. At the time of his HIV discovery, only a small fraction of HIV victims were heterosexual men and so many of them thought they were immune to the disease. During this time, rumours spread like wildfire that Magic Johnson was either bisexual or gay but Magic quickly denied those allegations and he didn’t let them affect his resolve to ‘battle this deadly disease.’ Magic Johnson was determined to prevent more people from contracting HIV and he played an instrumental role in spreading accurate information about the virus to the wider American audience during that time. For this, he received a lot of praise from News Agencies and even from George H. W. Bush, the then-US President. Fans quickly begged him to come back to the game and he humbly obliged. Although former teammates like A. C. Green and Byron Scott were against the idea, he was listed as a starter for the NBA All Star Game of 1992 which was held at the Orlando Arena. Karl Malone, a forward from the Utah Jazz team, and many other NBA players from opposing teams were also against playing with him on the court, saying they were at risk of contamination if he ever suffered an open wound while playing. Despite all this opposition, Magic Johnson still held his cool and went on to record 5 rebounds, 9 assists, and 25 points to help win the game. After successfully securing the three-pointer that ended the game, scores of players from both teams ran on to the court to congratulate him for the victory. He also won the All-Star MVP award. The Barcelona Olympic Games were also held later that year and Magic Johnson was selected to be a member of the United States’ basketball team. Everyone dubbed them the ‘Dream Team’ since it consisted of basketballers who were thought to be unbeatable. This included Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Michael Jordan. Of course, the dream team didn’t disappoint. They dominated the competition from the very first game and went on to win the gold medal for the U.S. with a record of 8-0. Magic Johnson himself experienced a lot of knee problems during that time and so he didn’t play frequently but whenever he did, he would use the opportunity to spread home to HIV-positive persons world wide and he received standing ovations from all who were present, too. After retiring from basketball completely, Magic went on to tour New Zealand, Australia, and Asia with a basketball team of former NBA and College players. He also worked as a commentator for NBC, wrote a book about safe sex, and made several businesses of his own. He also created a charity event called ‘A Midsummer Night’s Magic’ which he held until 2005. This event raised over $1.3 million for the United Negro College Fund in 1992. Magic Johnson also became the present of the basketball operations for the L.A. Lakers on February 21, 2017. He retired from this position two years later on April 9, 2019. And therein lay his greatness: the fact he was able to equally contend with the greats in basketball at the time and give them an admirable challenge despite being a part of an average to mediocre team. Larry Bird was born on the 7^th of December 1956 in West Baden Springs, Indiana. His parents were Claude Joseph Bird and Georgia Bird and they were of Native American, Scottish and Irish heritage. They lived in a poor community called French Lick which was not too far from West Baden Springs. His dad had been a veteran of the Korean War who’d found work at a nearby factory. Meanwhile, his mother was a waitress who eventually had to juggle two jobs to take care of her six children when she and her husband got divorced. Sadly, Larry’s dad became an alcoholic soon after this divorce and he eventually committed suicide 1 year after the divorce was finalized. Larry’s childhood was rough- both emotionally and financially. His parents’ divorce really took a toll on both him and his siblings and these familial troubles pushed him into the game of basketball even more. While on the court, Larry found temporary escape from all the trials in his life and he got a sense of what true greatness entailed. Thus, he craved more and he put in the practice needed to achieve that greatness, too! Larry Bird quickly became a basketball legend during his high school years; everyone in French Lick knew of his greatness and were predicting that he would be the next big star in the NBA by the time he left high school. Those predictions didn’t play out exactly as they had anticipated since he opted to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers upon leaving high school. The Indiana Hoosiers is the basketball team of the Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana; at the time, they were under the tutelage of coach Bobby Knight. But nostalgia would soon have its toll on Larry shortly after and within one month he was back in French Lick attending the local community college there. One year later, Larry Bird found himself at the Indiana State University where he joined the Sycamores- their local basketball team. While playing for the Sycamores, Larry was actually drafted for the Boston Celtics 1978 NBA team! He was their 6^th overall pick that year and everyone at the Indiana State University thought that they’d have to wave him goodbye as he embarked on his journey to NBA excellence. But Larry made a move that shocked everyone in the NBA and sent ripples of amazement through the Indiana State University. In 1978 when Larry was drafted by the NBA, he chose, instead, to continue playing for his university team, leading them to an undefeated regular season. The 1979-1980 season of the NBA saw Larry Bird’s official entry into professional basketball. During the course of his career, Larry Bird is the only person in the history of the NBA to be named All-Star MVP, Finals MVP, Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Executive of the Year, and Coach of the Year.
