John Teller is a posthumous character in the television series "Sons of Anarchy," created by Kurt Sutter. He is portrayed as the deceased father of the series' protagonist, Jackson 'Jax' Teller, and was one of the co-founders of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club.

Although John is deceased before the events of the series, his presence is felt throughout the show, mainly through his memoir/manuscript, "The Life and Death of Sam Crow: How the Sons of Anarchy Lost Their Way," which serves as a philosophical guideline for the series.

John Teller was a Vietnam War veteran who, along with Piney Winston, founded the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club in Charming, California, in 1967. His vision was to create a brotherhood that would provide a sense of belonging and purpose for those who felt displaced and disillusioned after the war. However, he soon became disillusioned with the direction the club was taking, as it gradually became involved in illegal activities.

John's death is shrouded in mystery and is a significant plot point in the series. It is suggested that he was killed in a motorcycle accident, but as the series progresses, it becomes clear that his death was not accidental. His suspicions about the club's future and the circumstances of his death form the central conflict of the show, impacting Jax and his decisions about the club's direction.

John Teller, despite never appearing in person in the series, is a crucial character. His vision, his legacy, and the mystery surrounding his death serve as an essential driving force behind the narrative of "Sons of Anarchy."
