How great of a basketball legend do you have to be to have the National Basketball Association (NBA) actually add your silhouette to their logo in an attempt to immortalize the memory of your greatness and have it live on forever? Oh, you thought the player on the NBA logo was just something generic? Oh no, my friend! That logo is the silhouette of none other than Jerry West! To this day, Jerry West still holds the NBA record for the average highest points per game in a playoff series. That record is a staggering 46.3 points/game.
Who would have thought that a boy who’d been born into a poor and abusive household would beat the odds and go on to conquer almost every NBA challenge given to him? In 1972, Jerry West was selected as the All-Star MVP; that was also the year he and his teammates won the NBA championships. He was selected to be a part of the NBA All Star Team 14 times and was voted to the All-NBA 1
st and 2
nd Teams all of 12 times. When he was 32 years old, the NBA All-Defensive Team was introduced to the sport and of course, Jerry West had to be a part of it. He would then be selected for the team an additional 4 times. Interestingly, Jerry West is the only player in NBA history to be chosen as the Finals MVP, despite being a member of the losing team.
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inducted Jerry West into their honour in 1980; he was also named to the NBA 35
th Anniversary Team that same year. In 1996, Jerry West was named as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history, and in 2021, he was named to the NBA 75
th Anniversary Team.
When his professional playing career in basketball came to an honourable end, Jerry West realized that there was still more that he could do for the sport. So he became the head coach for the L.A. Lakers for three years. He then moved on to become the general manager of the L.A. Lakers during their 1982-1983 season. The L.A. Lakers won six championship rings under his leadership before he moved on to the Memphis Grizzlies and worked his magic over there. For his significant accomplishments in leadership, Jerry West won 2 NBA Executive of the Year Awards: in 1995 with the L.A. Lakers and in 2004 with the Memphis Grizzlies.
