Bush The 2000 elections will go down in history as one of the most controversial elections ever recorded in US history! Yet George W Bush emerged as the victor, despite having lost the national popular vote. The 43rd president of the United States hails from a family of prominent politicians, including a governor, a US senator, and even a US president! That’s right: George W. Bush’s father was a president himself! This was between the years of 1989 to 1993. The story of George W. Bush is quite an interesting one, filled with many trials and conflicts. So let us take a trip down memory lane and see how a president who lost the national popular vote when he was first coming into office would end up becoming the most popular US president in the history of unofficial polling, reaching an astounding approval rate of 90% in some states after the 9/11 attacks. George W. Bush spent 4 years of his life living in the Whitehouse and at first, he wanted nothing to do with politics and public service. Having attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Yale University in 1968, he then went on to join the Texas Air National Guard. He trained for two years in active-duty service before he was assigned to flying for the Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base. While there, he received significant opposition from his peers since many of them believed he was receiving favorable treatment due to his father’s political status. They may have had a point since George W. Bush had been selected as a pilot even though he had attended his pilot training classes irregularly and had low test scores from his pilot aptitude tests. Their contempt would eventually be appeased on November 21, 1974 when George Bush was honorably discharged from the Air Force Reserve. He thus lost his right to fly as a pilot in the United States. George W. Bush then went on to obtain his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975. After that, he vigorously pursued his entrepreneurial aspirations and by 1978, his small oil and gas exploration firm Arbusto Energy was in operation. His political aspirations were slowly manifesting too, since he decided to run for the House of Representatives from Texas’ 19th congressional district. But it was too soon for Mr. Bush; fate would not have him win just yet and he lost to Kent Hance. He attempted to enter politics once again in 1994 and got his breakthrough by means of the Texas Gubernatorial Election held on the 8th of November 1994. He was officially sworn in as governor of Texas in 1995 and held the office until 2000 when he won the US presidency Controversy erupted the moment voters cast their ballots on Tuesday, November 7, 2000. Even by nightfall, no clear winner had emerged! Ultimately, it came down to the electoral votes from the state of Florida to decide the winner and the final results were so very close that a recount was demanded by law! In the end, George W. Bush won Al Gore by a margin of 0.009% and the 2000 Presidential Elections became one of the closest elections in US history. It was also the first presidential election since 1888 in which the successful presidential aspirant lost the popular vote. The September 11 Attacks The airline hijackings and four planned terrorist attacks committed by the radical Islamist terrorist group Al-Qaeda on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, would devastate Americans near and far and leave the rest of the world mortified forever. It brought Americans together in a spirit of sadness and patriotism while the world looked on in mourning at the loss of all the lives wickedly erased that day. It was also a pivotal part of George W. Bush’s presidency and changed the direction of it completely. He had entered the Whitehouse with ambitious plans for the country but those plans were significantly altered by the September 11 attacks. The terrorists took over 4 commercial aircrafts and willfully crashed them into a part of the Pentagon Building on the outskirts of Washington D.C., the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. To date, it is the worst terrorist incident to happen in the United States, having killed nearly three thousand people. Many expected George W. Bush to run away in hiding under the protection of the US military after the attacks, but surprisingly he didn’t do that. Instead, he boldly addressed the mourning American nation and assured them that stricter measures would be put in place to ensure something like this would never happen on American soil again and he assured the families of all those affected by the attacks that the perpetrators and their accomplices would pay for their actions. After this speech, his nationwide approval soared to a level never seen before in recent times. Yet that nationwide approval would be reversed during the 2007-2008 financial crisis, thus making George W. Bush simultaneously one of the most popular and one of the most unpopular presidents in US history. The Iraq War George W. Bush and his administration accused Osama bin Laden of the 9/11 Attacks. He was a radical Islamist whose terrorist network al-Qaeda proudly declared that they were responsible for the attacks. George W. Bush and his administration also accused the Afghanistan government of harboring Osama bin Laden and hiding him from the American military. So, they ventured into the Middle East, toppled the Afghanistan government, and started a war that would eventually cost the government more than 1 trillion dollars. At first, Americans supported the Iraq war wholeheartedly but as the war stretched out over the years, they started to see it as a mistake of epic proportions! Many felt it was a violation of human rights, an abuse of power, and a wastage of the country’s resources. Guantanamo Bay As the Iraq war continued into 2002, George W. Bush and the American military started transferring suspected al-Qaeda members and captured Taliban fighters to their special prison complex at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. There they kept hundreds of prisoners without charge and gave them no legal means by which to challenge their detentions. This caused havoc from onlookers around the globe and local Americans alike since this act was a violation of the Geneva Conventions that the United States had signed in 1929 in relation to keeping prisoners of war. The controversy surrounding Guantanamo Bay became even more heated in 2004 when a report was released showing that the American personnel on-site were basically torturing the prisoners there. George W. Bush and his administration fervently denied all the accusations levied against them but by this time, public support in him had already fallen significantly. He also began to get more international scrutiny as other countries looked on questionably. Hurricane Katrina Another major tragedy that struck during George W. Bush’s tenure was hurricane Katrina on August 23, 2005. Hurricane Katrina was a category 5 destructive hurricane that caused significant damage and death to many areas, especially the city of New Orleans and its environs. Over 1800 lives were lost and the damage was estimated to be around $125 billion. George W. Bush received widespread criticism for his administration’s inadequate response to the crisis. They criticized him for having incompetent leaders and many suggested that the limited federal response resources was because most of the country's monetary resources had been used up in the Iraq war. In response to the mounting criticisms, George W. Bush came forward and accepted full responsibility for the country’s handling of the tragedy- a move that caused his approval ratings to plummet even further. George W. Bush – The Good Despite all the negatives that people have to say about Mr. Bush, he undeniably did a lot of good, too. He was the first president to declare a federal ban on racial and ethnic profiling; he did this in 2003. He also accepted record numbers of asylum-seekers and refugees during his presidency and he helped to create a path through which many illegal immigrants could finally get citizenship in the USA. He also showed admirable tolerance to non-hostile Arabs and Muslims in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks during a time when anti-Arab and anti-Muslim sentiment had skyrocketed. His non-xenophobic stance was extremely admirable since every other US president who faced terrorist attacks from outsiders ultimately gave in to xenophobia. In fact, President Bush held Muslim events there at the Whitehouse and he held pro-Muslim and pro-Arab meetings with civil rights groups after the 9/11 attacks, too. This was a phenomenal example for all other Americans to follow, since many of them had started resenting Muslims and others of Arab descent. Another interesting point to note is that none of the four offices of the executive branch had ever been occupied by non-whites before George W. Bush’s presidency. When President Bush came into power, he changed this by appointing two African-American Secretaries of State and a Latino Attorney General. PEPFAR was another significant accomplishment of president George W. Bush that is worthy of much praise. PEPFAR is an acronym that stands for the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief. PEPFAR was a program implemented by George W. Bush in 2003 to save the lives of millions of Africans who were affected by HIV/AIDS. In the first five years alone, the program spent over $15 billion and so far, the HIV/AIDS rates have declined by 10% in the areas supported by PEPFAR. PEPFAR is the most impactful global health initiative in history which targets a single disease and it has changed the trajectory of the AIDS pandemic by helping to save millions of lives and giving counselling to those who need it.
