Dennis Rodman is the man who often leaves people’s mouths open in wonder as they struggle to come up with words to accurately describe him. Oftentimes, they simply have to settle with the word ‘Enigma’ because that is the word that comes closest to fully encapsulating all that he is. Dennis Rodman was a beast on the basketball court, someone who is lauded by many as the best rebounder to ever grace the NBA courts. He wears that crown to this day because since then, no one has even come close to dethroning him in the subtle art of rebounding. But outside the basketball court, Dennis Rodman was and still is nothing short of a marvel; someone whose outlandish behaviour and lifestyle have left many irritated or in awe. But who was Dennis Rodman before he became known as ‘The Worm’ – the phenomenal defender and rebounder who could wiggle his way into your space and have the ball out of your hand in the blink of an eye? Who was Dennis Rodman before he adopted his ‘bad boy’ persona with frequently changing hair colours, tattoos, piercings, and his 1996 marriage to himself? To answer this question, we’ll have to dig deep into his troubled childhood and the different events that shaped him into the man he is today. Dennis Keith Rodman was born on May 13, 1961, to parents Philander Rodman Jr. and Shirley Rodman. His father was a member of the Air Force who eventually fought in the Vietnam War which commenced in 1955. Sadly, his father left his family when he was a very young boy and later settled in the Philippines. Dennis would not see his dad again until 2012 when he was 51 years old! Thus his mom had to take up multiple odd jobs to support her family- sometimes she even juggled four simultaneously! It was actually his mom who gave him the name ‘The Worm’ after observing how much he wiggled when he played pinball. She raised both him and his sisters, Kim and Debra, in one of the most impoverished areas in the city of Dallas, an area known as Oak Cliff. Dennis actually developed an interest in the game of basketball by watching his sisters Kim and Debra. Sadly, his mom thought they were more talented in basketball than he was so she showed them more of her interest. But that didn’t stop little Dennis from tagging along while they played. By the time Dennis made it to South Oak Cliff High School, no one thought he was an athletic standout. To make matters worse, he measured only 1.68 meters (5 ft 6 in) in his freshman year. Whenever he made it to the high school basketball teams, they would either bench him or cut him from the team altogether. He also failed on multiple occasions to make it to their football teams. At the time, this shattered his inner dreams of making it big on the NBA courts. But after leaving high school at a height of 1.75 meters (5ft 11 in) something miraculous happened! While working at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport as an overnight janitor, Dennis experienced a sudden growth spurt which had him standing at a whopping 2.01 meters (6ft 7 in) tall! God had answered his prayers, his NBA ambitions had resurrected and so he decided to try out for different basketball teams once again. A family friend also informed the head coach of his spectacular talents on the basketball courts, and before long, Dennis was on the team of the Cooke County College in Gainesville, Texas, which has now been rebranded as the North Central Texas College. He did well on that team but it was when he transferred to the Southeastern Oklahoma State University that he really began to shine! He made it to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-American team three times- from 1983 to 1986. He was also the leader in its rebounding in both 1985 and 1986, registering a .637 goal percentage during those years. During his years on the NAIA All-American, he averaged 15.7 rebounds and 25.7 points. In his final year on the NAIA All-American, he scored all of 46 points in one game. He also recorded 32 rebounds- a tournament-tying record, which helped his team finish at #3 in the nation-the highest rank in school history at the time. His spectacular performance in the NAIA got him an invite to the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament- the place where young basketball players go if they are looking to make it to the NBA. While there, he won the Most Valuable Player honor and got picked for the Detroit Pistons. Thus, he finally achieved his dream of becoming a professional NBA player at last.  But his best was yet to come! At first, he was a bit reserved and it took some time for him to really settle into himself and release the spectacular skills that he had bubbling on the inside onto the NBA Courts. But by the 1989-1990 and 1990-1991 seasons, he was ready to show the country what a tenacious defensive player he really was. In fact, he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in those seasons and by the time his career came to a close, he made it to the league’s All-Defensive team a total of seven times. Even more importantly, he was starting to develop his ferocious rebounding skills. He wasn’t exceptionally great at leaping, but his desire, tenacity, and timing combined with his ability to anger his opponents by shoving, grabbing, and holding made him one of the best rebounders in the NBA. He was the top rebounder for seven straight seasons, from 1991-1992 to 1997-1998 and after playing in the NBA for 14 seasons, he had amassed an astounding total of 11,954. After the death of his favorite coach and finding out that his wife had cheated on him, Dennis Rodman began to adopt a new persona- one marked by constantly changing hair colors on the court, multiple piercings, and a gallery of tattoos all over his body. During this time, he would frequently have temper tantrums on the court and he would boldly defy the commands of league officials and coaches, too. All of these made him a national celebrity with thousands tuning in for each of his matches to see what form of entertainment he’d deliver in that game. The crowds loved him! To them, he was Dennis Rodman- the bad boy who lived on the edge! Dennis Rodman partied wildly, he dated Madonna and he was even married to Carmen Electra for a short period, too. He authored many books about his life and even wedded himself on the streets of New York- fully decked out in a custom-made bridal gown. Yet all these eccentricities didn’t affect his performances on the basketball court. His team members could still count on him to deliver fantastic rebounding and defence and he was still lauded as one of the best players in the game. His opponents still could count on him to deliver a fear-inducing performance on the court, and so they still had to train harder whenever a match with him was imminent. His outlandish behaviour off-court and stellar performance on it caused the media frenzy around his life to be overwhelming but Dennis Rodman didn’t let it bother him one bit. He was living life to the fullest and maximizing every one of his dreams. Today, you can live life to the fullest and own a replica NBA Championship Trophy signed and sealed by Dennis Rodman himself.
