The menacing antagonist named Darth Vader who has plagued the Star Wars trilogy for years was first played by David Prowse himself. Yet David wasn’t only a world-renowned actor; over the course of his life, he has been a master weightlifter, an expert bodybuilder, and he even wrote his autobiography entitled "Straight from the Force's Mouth” too. Today, we’ll take a brief look into the life of David Prowse and see why he’s seen as an immortal superstar all around the world who is envisioned any time the words ‘Star Wars’ are mentioned. David Prowse was born in Bristol, England on July 1, 1935, to Charles Prowse and Gladys Prowse. He had gained a scholarship and attended the Bristol Grammar School for many years. But David developed an interest in bodybuilding from a very tender age and he had the physique to match it, too. He stood at 1.98 meters tall (6 ft 6 in) and one of his very first jobs was working as a bouncer at a nearby club. It was at his workplace that he would meet his future wife, Norma E. Scammell, who he would marry in 1963. In 1962, David had huge success in the British Heavyweight Weightlifting Championship and he won the competition successively for the next two years. He even went on to represent England at the South Perth City Hall in Perth, Australia at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. David would have his first official acting role a few years later in 1968 when he played a short cameo role of a weightlifter in episode 2 of The Champions- a thrilling British television show which aired from 1968 to 1969. He also played the role of Julian, Frank Alexander’s helper in the 1971 film A Clockwork Orange. It was his impressive acting in this movie that got him noticed by George Lucas, the future director of the Star Wars movies. In 1972, David appeared as a Minotaur in Doctor Who and he also appeared in Vampire Circus as a circus strongman. By 1973, David was appearing as Coppin, an android, in The Tomorrow People series. Yet the younger folks of that time may also remember him as the Green Cross Man. The Green Cross Man was a superhero created by the British government to encourage road safety, especially among little children. Numerous films of the Green Cross Man were created and aired on British television and what better person to choose to portray this character than David Prowse himself? These advertisements featuring the Green Cross Man were first aired on British television in 1975 and continued for 15 years. David later received an Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his continued involvement in such an important campaign. In 1976, he also made a guest appearance in the 14th episode of the 2nd series of Space: 1999, a British, Science Fiction show which ran from 1975 to 1977. But the role that brought David Prowse to worldwide prominence was playing Darth Vader’s physical form in the first three movies of the Star Wars trilogy. David’s voice was not malevolent and sinister enough, so James Earl Jones’ voice replaced his in the final movies. These films quickly became pop culture phenomena from which countless films, video games, TV spin-offs, etc. were spawned. This pushed David Prowse into international stardom and fans have been loving him ever since. David has also authored several books, including ‘Fitness is Fun’ in 1979 and an autobiography entitled ‘Straight from the Force's Mouth’ in 2011. This autobiography outlines his life before and after starring in the Star Wars hit. Sadly, David Prowse died at the age of 85 at a hospital in London, England on November 28, 2020. But if you are a loyal fan of David Prowse then consider this your lucky day! MJB Memorabilia has searched all ends of the Earth and thankfully we have found a Star Wars photograph that has been signed by David Prowse himself. Finding this photograph signed by David Prowse wasn’t easy but we know how important it is for his fans to have a piece of his legacy after his passing.
