Dave Grohl has been a member of numerous successful bands over the ages. These include Scream, Them Crooked Vultures, and Nirvana- the band that is credited with popularizing alternative rock in the United States and beyond. Yet the band for which he is most remembered is the rock band Foo Fighters, also known as the Dee Gees and the H*ly Sh*ts. This band needs no introduction to rock fans worldwide, having been inducted in 2021 into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their initial year of eligibility. In that same year, the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards decided to give out their very first “Global Icon” award; who do you think won it? That’s right! Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters. The Foo Fighters have also been the most successful rock band in Grammy history, having amassed 15 Grammy Awards to date- this includes 5 Best Rock Albums. Dave, whose full name is David Eric Grohl, is actually the main songwriter, guitarist, and singer for the Foo Fighters- a band he started. He was born on January 14, 1969 in Warren, Ohio and he is of Slovak, Irish and German descent. His father was the award-winning journalist and News Writer James Harper Grohl and his mother was teacher Virginia Jean (née Hanlon). His family moved to Springfield, Virginia during his childhood, and sadly his parents got divorced when he was only seven years old. Thus, he was mostly raised by his mother during his childhood and adolescent years. Around the age of 12, Dave Grohl started developing an interest in the guitar and after growing tired of guitar lessons, he decided to teach himself. This paid off well for him and his little friends since they played around in different juvenile bands of their own making. Yet it was the summer of 1982 that he spent in Evanston, Illinois at his cousin Tracey’s house that would have the most musical influence on his life and the career he took later in life. Tracey was the one who carried him and his sister to various punk bands and introduced them to the genre of punk rock. Needless to say: Dave Grohl was hooked! During his adolescence, he attended numerous schools, including Annandale High School, Bishop Ireton High School, and Thomas Jefferson High School. He also joined several local bands during this time, playing as their local guitarist. He gained significant traction as the guitarist in Freak Baby- a local band in his area. Freak Baby eventually reshuffled its lineup and even fired its bass player. It was at this time that his other members learnt that he had also taught himself how to play the drums very well and so they made him their new drummer whilst renaming their band the Mission Impossible. Scream was a popular adult rock band in Washington, D.C. and beyond during the mid-1980s. When Dave Grohl was only 17 years old, the news spread like a wildfire that Kent Stax, Scream’s drummer, had departed the group and that they were in need of a drummer. Of course, Dave Grohl auditioned for the position and the band was very impressed with his drumming skills…so they hired him! Little did they know that he had lied about his age and was only 17 years old at the time. This forced him to drop out of high school during his junior year, but he didn’t care, he was “extremely anxious to see the world.” He’d go on to record 2 studio albums, 1 live album and tour extensively with the band until it disbanded unexpectedly in 1990. Thankfully, Dave Grohl had mutual friends with members of the Nirvana band. One mutual friend in particular, Buzz Osborne, shared the numbers of Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain with Dave when their band was looking for a drummer. They invited him to come and audition in Seattle and he passed the audition with flying colors. Thus, Dave Grohl was a new member of the Nirvana band. He recorded several songs and albums with the band before they recorded the 1991 Album Nevermind which would become a worldwide commercial success and exceed all of their expectations. In the years that followed, Dave Grohl contributed a lot more to the band’s songwriting and even a little bit to their guitar riffs, too. However, the Nirvana band was forced to disband on April 8, 1994, when the body of Kurt Cobain, their lead vocalist, and guitarist, was found in Seattle, Washington at his home. He had killed himself about 3 days earlier with a shot to his head, leaving behind a suicide note that they found nearby. The suicide of his former bandmate sent Dave Grohl down a path of deep melancholy. He thus started creating music of his own as a means of catharsis from the pain. He recorded the music at the Robert Lang Studios in October of that same year and performed all of the instruments and vocals by himself (with the exception of “X-Static” which had a single guitar part that was played by Gred Dulli). Dave Grohl didn’t want to start his own solo career in music and so he just named his demo Foo Fighters, thinking it wouldn’t get much attention. But boy, was he wrong! Major labels from near and far started calling him upon hearing his demo and it was at this moment that Dave realized he had to recruit his other band members fast. So eventually he recruited Nate Mendel for bass and William Goldsmith for the drums- both former members of Sunny Day Real Estate, a band that had recently disbanded. He also recruited Pat Smear, a former touring Nirvana guitarist and Germs member. Although they’ve seen many band member changes over the years, the Foo Fighters have amassed 57 singles, 6 video albums, 10 extended plays (EPs), and 10 studio albums. Many of these albums have achieved platinum certification in the US, Canada, Australia, and other countries. They have also had numerous singles chart the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard 200 charts. Their current lineup consists of Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett who play the guitar, Nate Mendel who plays bass, Rami Jaffee who plays the keyboard and of course, Dave Grohl who plays the guitar and provides the vocals. If you’ve been a fan of Dave Grohl from the moment he first touched the international scene, then don’t hesitate to grab this signed guitar before it is too late. This signed guitar has been fully authenticated by MJB Memorabilia, Beckett Authentication and is just waiting for the biggest Dave Grohl fan to take it home.
