Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known by his stage name The Weeknd, is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer who has left an indelible mark on the music industry. Born on February 16, 1990, in Toronto, Canada, The Weeknd initially rose to prominence in 2010 after anonymously posting several songs on YouTube.

The Weeknd's unique blend of contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop, coupled with his distinctively emotive, often falsetto singing style, quickly garnered him a significant following. He released a series of critically acclaimed mixtapes—House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence—which were eventually remastered and compiled into the 2012 album Trilogy after he signed with Republic Records.

The Weeknd achieved major commercial success with his second studio album, "Beauty Behind the Madness" in 2015, which became his first Billboard 200 number one. It included the number one singles "Can't Feel My Face" and "The Hills," and earned him two Grammy Awards. His third album, "Starboy" (2016), also surged to the top of the charts, bolstered by its title track featuring Daft Punk.

In 2020, he released his fourth studio album, "After Hours," which also achieved critical acclaim and commercial success. The album's hit single "Blinding Lights" broke records for its lengthy stay atop the Billboard charts.

The Weeknd's influence extends beyond music. His aesthetic style, particularly his notable red suit and bandaged face during the "After Hours" era, has made waves in pop culture. The iconography, as the singer revealed, is a statement on the superficiality and dangers of Hollywood.

Despite his many successes, The Weeknd has remained somewhat of an enigma, preferring to let his music speak for itself. His contributions to the music industry have garnered him numerous awards, including three Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, and nine Billboard Music Awards. As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, The Weeknd continues to make music and push the boundaries of contemporary pop and R&B
