The Karate Kid is a classic martial arts film of the 80’s that took the world by storm and won the hearts of millions around the globe! It saw the character Daniel and his mom being completely uprooted from their home city in New Jersey and moving to California so that she could excel in her new job. However, Daniel finds it hard to fit in at his new suburban high school and he is often bullied and beaten by similar-aged kids at his school. These kids also happen to be karate black belts who are not afraid to showcase their martial arts skills on poor Daniel. Daniel only finds friendship in the company of the beautiful Ali but sadly, this budding friendship causes him even more trouble! This is because Ali is the ex-girlfriend of the main antagonist and Black-belt champion, Johnny, and he is very jealous of her. One day when the boys have nearly beaten Daniel to a pulp, his elderly neighbor, Mr. Miyagi, jumps in and saves him by outfighting all of the teenagers who are beating him up. Mr. Miyagi and Daniel soon form an unbreakable friendship and he agrees to teach Daniel karate, so that he can outfight Johnny at the coveted All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament that Johnny has been winning for the past two years. Of course, Daniel eventually destroys Johnny in the championship and this story sets the stage for a series of sequels that we all know and love today. It also sets the stage for the beloved Cobra Kai series which premiered on May 2, 2018. The Cobra Kai series revisits the rivalry between Daniel and Johnny after three decades but it now shares the story from the point of view of Johnny. Johnny has basically wasted his life and is now an unemployed, alcoholic handyman who constantly wishes he could right the wrongs of his past. On the other hand, Daniel is happily married and is a successful businessman. Yet, the death of his long-time friend and mentor, Mr. Miyagi, has left a hole in his life that can only be filled by practising the art of karate and sharing the principles Mr. Miyagi taught him with upcoming youngsters. Before long, Johnny decides to restart the dojo in which he trained during his teenage years. This dojo is the notorious Cobra Kai. The rivalry between him and Daniel soon resurrects, thereby creating a series with many twists and turns that has captivated millions of fans to this date. But who plays the character of Daniel in all of these films? Well, it is none other than Ralph Macchio- a beloved actor and producer who has kept Daniel’s character fascinating and intriguing for over 30 years. Ralph’s full name is actually Ralph George Macchio Jr. and he was born in Huntington, New York on November 4, 1961. His father’s name is Ralph George Macchio and he is of Greek and Italian descent. His mother’s name is Rosalie Macchio (née DeSantis) and she is completely Italian. Ralph attended the Half Hollows Hill Central School District in Dix Hills, New York until he was 18 years of age but he actually started tap dancing lessons at the age of three. He took these dance classes at the June Claire School of Dance in Babylon, Long Island. At the age of sixteen years, a talent agent quickly discovered his superb acting skills and took him away from dancing and into professional acting. Before long he was cast in Eight Is Enough as the character Jeremy Andretti. Eight is Enough is a Comedy-Drama television series that ran from March 15, 1977 to May 23, 1981, amassing five seasons in all. It shows the family life of the Bradfords: Nicholas, Tommy, Susan, Elizabeth, Nancy, Joanie, David, and Mary. After losing their mother Joan, the patriarch of the family, Tom Bradford, later remarries a school teacher named Abby who helps to rekindle the familial bond among them. Jeremy is Abby’s orphaned nephew and his character is played by Ralph Macchio who joins the series in its last season. Of course, Ralph Macchio nails it and it’s his superb performance in this series that wins him his next major acting role. This would come in the form of the character Johnny Cade from the 1983 film The Outsiders. This film was actually nominated for four Young Artist Awards, given the phenomenal young actors and actresses that were a part of it of which, Mr. Ralph Macchio is included. In fact, soon after this film was released, he was quickly contacted by producers of the next film that would kickstart his career and propel him into international stardom. This film is none other than The Karate Kid and it needs no introduction.   Since then, Ralph Macchio has had innumerable acting roles in films, including the many sequels of The Karate Kid, Ugly Betty, Crossroads, My Cousin Vinny and The Deuce- in which he played the character Officer Haddix. He has also appeared in Hitchcock, Beer League, A Good Night to Die, Popcorn Shrimp, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and many others. Yet Ralph Macchio has not limited himself to only films, no. Ralph Macchio has also appeared in a number of music videos, including ‘The Ballad of Danko Jones’, ‘I Think Bad Thoughts’ and ‘Had Enough’ for the artist Danko Jones. He has also appeared in ‘Sweep the Leg’ for No More Kings. If you’re loving Ralph Macchio even more after reading about all of his artistic endeavours, then don’t be afraid to grab this signed Karate Kid Headband that has been signed and sealed by him.
