Michael J. Fox is a face we’ve been seeing in hit comedies and sitcoms since the 1980s and in more recent years, he’s been championing the cause of those who suffer from Parkinson’s Disease worldwide. But who is this celebrity male that had women’s hearts throbbing during the prime of his youth and is now the object of Canadians’ pride and adoration? During his acting career, Michael J. Fox won a Grammy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and five Primetime Emmy Awards. In 2002, he was inducted into the Canadian Walk of Fame and then into the Hollywood Walk of Fame two years later. In 2010, Michael J. Fox was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and that same year was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Karolinska Institute for his work of advocacy in the research of Parkinson’s Disease. Today we’ll take a look at the life of Michael J. Fox and learn why fans worldwide love him so much! Interestingly, Michael J. Fox’s legal name is actually Michael Andrew Fox. He chose the stage name Michael J. Fox because another actor had already registered under the name Michael Fox and he didn’t want to use his middle initial ‘A’ lest magazines use it as a double entendre and headline their articles with “Michael, A Fox!” He was born on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Canada to Phyllis and William Fox. Phyllis was an actress herself and also a payroll clerk, while William eventually became a police dispatcher after spending years as a veteran in the Canadian Force. They are both of Scottish, English, and Irish descent, thereby giving Michael a very rich heritage. Michael attended the Burnaby Central Secondary School and in 1977, he had his acting début in the Canadian television sitcom Leo and Me. Leo and Me was shared with the public one year later and shows the humorous but tricky encounters of a lucky Italian adventurer named Leo (played by Brent Carver) who had won a massive yet decrepit yacht in a game of poker. Leo took his orphaned nephew Jamie (played by Michael) to live with him on the yacht and together they try to keep out of trouble. Michael was 15 years old when he started filming Leo and Me and by the time he was 18, he was certain acting was the career he wanted to fully pursue, so he moved to Los Angeles to make it happen. Producer Ronald Shedlo soon discovered Michael J. Fox and placed him in the Film Letters from Frank, thereby thrusting him into the American Acting spotlight and giving him his American television début. He then went on to appear in Class of 1984 and Midnight Madness. Before long, he had Americans hooked to their screens as he appeared in the show Family Ties as the character Alex P. Keaton. Michael won three Emmy Awards in 1986, 1987, and 1988 for his performance in this show and he went on to win a Golden Globe Award for his performance in the show the following year. Michael J. Fox was lauded as a teen idol during his time and went on to star in Casualties of War, The Secret of My Success, Light of Day, Teen Wolf, Back to the Future, and a number of other hit shows. Sadly, in 1991, Michael realized that his shoulder had become inexplicably sore and his little finger started to twitch a little while he was shooting scenes for the movie Doc Hollywood. After doing medical testing he realized that he had developed Parkinson’s disease and for some strange reason, three other members of the crew and cast of Leo and Me had developed it, too. In 1998, he made it known to his fans that he had developed the disease and he became a strong advocate for its thorough research. He even set up The Michael J. Fox Foundation which has raised more than $100 million for the full research of the disease. He has also passionately advocated with politician Claire McCaskill for more in-depth embryonic stem cell research, too. His work in these two important fields has left his name on the tongues of Mehmet Oz and Oprah Winfrey and he has even been named by Time Magazine as someone "whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world." He’s also received honorary degrees from the Justice Institute of British Columbia, the University of British Columbia and Karolinska Institute. Michael J. Fox has been a heartthrob of Americans, and Canadians for more than three decades and he has been a pioneer of scientific research in various fields for years. So if you’ve been a fan of Michael J. Fox and you want to show him some love, then now is your time to grab this authentic signed Back to the Future Jacket that has been signed and sealed by Michael himself! This Signed Back to the Future jacket has been fully authenticated by MJB Memorabilia and is just waiting for the perfect Michael J. Fox fan to give it a new home.
