How did you manage to be named among the ranks of LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar when you had only been playing the game of professional basketball for nine years? That’s right! By 2019 and 2020, Giannis Antetokounmpo had already secured two consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player awards, making him one of only three players to have achieved this feat before the age of 26. Yet his achievements do not stop there! Standing at a whopping 2.11 meters (6 ft, 11 inches), this basketball legend in the making has even been compared to the great Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan, The Great, after becoming one of only three players in the history of the game to secure both the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and the NBA Most Valuable Player award in the same season. He has all the moves to bring that ball into the hoop and today we are going to explore the basketball superstar- Giannis Antetokounmpo. Now, the Greek Freak, whose full name is Giannis Antetokounmpo was born on the 6th of December 1994 in Athens, Greece. His parents had moved there three years earlier from Lagos, Nigeria, and raised him in the district of Sepolia. Sadly, Giannis and his other brothers did not automatically receive citizenship as Greek nationals due to the jus sanguinis laws recognized in Greece. These laws basically grant citizenship to people only if at least one parent is a citizen of the land. Since both his parents were from Nigeria, Giannis was NOT recognized as a citizen of either Greece or Nigeria until May 9, 2013, when he was officially recognized as a Grecian; two years later, he received his Nigerian passport, which officially made him a dual citizen. Since his parents couldn’t find much work in Greece, Giannis and his brothers helped out financially by hawking sunglasses, handbags, and watches on the streets. But in 2007, Giannis discovered his love for the game of basketball and his brothers quickly followed. In just a few years, Giannis Antetokounmpo went from discovering the rules of the game to playing on the top basketball youth teams in Greece and dominating them all! The 2011-2012 season of the Semi-Pro Greek B Basketball League saw Giannis Antetokounmpo playing with the Filathlitikos senior men’s team. A few days after he turned 18, he grabbed the attention of the Spanish Club CAI Zaragoza, who offered him a four year deal that included seasonal NBA buyouts. Other major European clubs, such as Efes and Barcelona, had also been interested in adding him that season, too. Giannis Antetokounmpo played in the Greek A2 League during the 2012-2013 basketball season. Over twenty six games, he averaged 1.0 block, 1.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 9.5 points per game. He also averaged 22.5 minutes per game and averaged 72.0% from the free throw line, 31.3% from the three-point range, and shot 46.4% from the field. What was even more special about this season was the fact that although he was not actually selected as an all-star of the 2013 Greek All-Star Game, he was still allowed to play as a special participant just as a treat to the fans. Giannis Antetokounmpo was officially eligible for the 2013 NBA draft on April 28, 2013. He was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks as their 15th overall first-round pick and signed his rookie contract on July 30, 2013. His sneakers officially graced the NBA courts on October 13, 2013. If you do your checks, you’ll realize that he was only 18 years and 311 days old at the time, making him one of the youngest players to ever play professional basketball in the NBA. During his rookie season, he averaged 0.8 blocks, 0.8 steals, 1.9 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 6.8 points in 77 games. He was able to grab 10 rebounds two times and score double figures all of 23 times in that season, resulting in double doubles. At the end of the season, he was the leading NBA rookie, after finishing the season with 61 blocks- the 7th most by a rookie from the Milwaukee Bucks in their franchise’s history. Giannis was subsequently selected to take a trip to New Orleans and participate in the Rising Stars Challenge at the NBA All-Star weekend. While there, he was able to give two assists, two rebounds, and tallied nine points in just seventeen minutes. He was also named to the NBA All-Rookie second team of 2013-2014. By the time his second season with the Milwaukee Bucks came around, fans saw improvements in both his team and his individual performance. Although they lost to the Houston Rockets on February 6, 2015, Giannis recorded a then career high of 15 rebounds and 27 points. By February 9, 2015, they had to honor him with the Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for his outstanding performances earlier that month. This was the first time in his professional career in which he had received such an award. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s third season was marked with even more personal improvement. On December 12, 2015, he recorded a near triple double with 8 assists, 12 rebounds, and 11 points and helped to snatch the unbeaten title from the Golden State Warriors by beating them 108-95. But he wouldn’t have to wait very long to unlock that triple double! By February 22, 2016, he and his team won the Los Angeles Lakers 108-101, with Antetokounmpo recording 10 assists, 12 rebounds, and 27 points. He was just 21 years old at the time and was the youngest person from the Milwaukee Bucks franchise to ever achieve such a feat. Giannis renewed his contract with the Milwaukee Bucks for $100 million on September 19, 2016. He extended it to four years and came ready to take his performance to astronomical levels! With each game, his performance just got better and better and it eventually catapulted him to the level of stardom he now boasts today. In one game, he propelled his team to victory at the final buzzer, scoring a 15-foot turnaround jumper which sent the New York Knicks back home with a loss at 105-104. During that game, Giannis recorded 13 rebounds and 27 points. In the thirteen games leading up to the record-breaking game of January 6th, Giannis ensured that he scored at least 20 points in each of them. And when he and his team squared off against the New York Knicks on the aforementioned date, Giannis was not prepared to let that streak go. He garnered all of 25 points in that game and thus matched the record made in 2006 by Michael Redd, a former Milwaukee Bucks player. On January 19, 2017, he became the first Greek NBA player to be named on the All-Star team. He was also the youngest player from his franchise to make the team, being only 22 years and 74 days old at the time. By the time March came around, he was making awe-inspiring performances on a grander scale- performances that were so good that they earned him the title of Eastern Conference Player of the Month one month later. Of course, this was the first award for him at the time and the first for his team since January 2004 when Michael Redd won it. He topped his team members in all five statistical categories (blocks, steals, assists, rebounds, points) during the 2016-2017 season and became the fifth player in the history of the NBA to do so. Only LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Scottie Pippen, and Dave Cowens had done so before. During this season, he was also the first NBA player to finish in the top 20 in all five of the statistical categories at the end of the season. Due to this impressive performance, he received the NBA Most Improved Player Award and was named to the All-NBA Second Team. Since then, Giannis Antetokounmpo has been making consistent improvements while breaking more records and achieving staggering results. He broke the record set at the Milwaukee Bucks for triple doubles in the 2017-2018 season. During this time, he was once again named to the All-NBA Team and he earned his second All-Star nomination. He was also named the NBA League’s Most Valuable Player at their end-of-season 2019 NBA Awards Night. This makes him the third youngest basketballer from the past 40 seasons to win the MVP award, behind LeBron James and Derrick Rose. Giannis Antetokounmpo was also named on the All-Star team on January 23, 2020, but this time around, he was named as a captain, alongside Lebron James. By September 18, 2020, Giannis joined the ranks of Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon when he won his second consecutive Most Valuable Player award. He is one of only three players to win an NBA Defensive Player of the Year award and an MVP award in the same season. He resigned with the bucks on December 15, 2020, for a 5 year contract worth $228 million- this is the highest amount that has ever been paid by the Milwaukee franchise. And Giannis Antetokounmpo came to this season ready to give his team their money’s worth! During the season, he 1.8 blocks, 1.2 steals, 5 assists, 13.2 rebounds, and 35.2 points to help the Milwaukee Bucks gain their first championship win in fifty years! He even joined the ranks of Lebron James, Shaquille O’Neal, and Michael Jordan by registering at least 40 pints in back to back Finals games. His performance during this season won him a Finals MVP award and he is the youngest person since Kawhi Leonard to do it since 2014. He is also the first European since Kirk Nowitzki in 2011 to win the Finals MVP award. Giannis Antetokounmpo also joins Hakeem Olajuwon and Michael Jordan as the only players to have won the Defensive Player of the Year, the Finals MVP, and the MVP awards during the span of their careers. “This guy is scary. He’s more athletic than I am. He’s longer than me. He’s faster. He’s going to be stronger than I am.” These are the words that were uttered by Kevin Durant, one of the legends of the game, when asked about Giannis Antetokunmpo. Today we have a signed authentic Milwaukee Bucks Jersey from the Greek Freak himself. Giannis Antetokounmpo is a legend in the making; will you let this opportunity to own a Milwaukee Bucks Jersey signed by him pass you by?
