5 Things You Didn’t Know About Coppola’s The Godfather

We all know the classic movie The Godfather. If you don’t, the 1972 crime film got directed by Francis Ford Coppola. 

Francis also wrote the script with the help of Mario Puzo. The period of the film is between 1945- 1955.

Famous actors starred in the memorable movie include Alfredo James Pacino, Marlon Brando, and Sterling Hayden.

1. Marlon Brando Didn’t Memorize His Lines

The Godfather

Marlon Brando who played as Vito Corleone never had his lines memorized. You heard that right. According to him, reading his lines on set made him sound more natural.

A report has it that he even had someone read lines through an earpiece he wore and repeated them.

The director also stuck cue cards on surrounding props or other actors.

Of course, it wasn’t evident that he was reading.

2. The Horse’s Head Was Not Fake

A real horse’s head got used on camera, but Coppola used a fake one during rehearsals. (John Marley’s screams were also real).

Relax, they didn’t kill a horse for that specific purpose. The bloody head got delivered by a slaughterhouse wrapped in a box with ice.

Coppola revealed that animal activists questioned him on the matter.

3. “Mafia” or “Mob” Were Not Used in The Film

To avoid making Italian Americans look bad, the two words ‘Mafia’ and ‘Mob’ were not used, and the film wasn’t shot in the neighbourhood.

Joseph Colombo was the leader of a crime family that could stop the film making process, so before they could use the words, they had to get permission from him. 

The film would put the criminal group’s secrets out there so after a meeting with Colombo, they reached the agreement that the only way their movie could get granted permission was if the words ‘Mafia’ and ‘Mob’ got removed, and they were. 

4. Coppola’s Daughter Acts in all Three Parts of Godfather 

Sofia Carmina Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, is the only actor to appear in all three parts of The Godfather.

She made her first appearance in The Godfather as the infant that got baptized. She played the role of the son of Connie Corleone, Michael Francis Rizzi. 

Although the role was uncredited, she played as an immigrant on the ship going to New York. 

In the last part of the trio, she played Mary Corleone, Michael’s daughter. She was criticized highly for taking the role after Winona Ryder’s drop out.

5. Many Famous Actors Failed To Get Roles in The Film

Dustin Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beaty and Alfredo Pacino’s best friend Robert DeNiro were some of the film stars who wanted to play the role of Micahel but got turned down.
